It's just one method of doing so with a large maintained list of sites. Although it does block some sites that people like to use such as MySpace (which with some editing can be fixed if you have a small amount of expertise). After using a hosts file for a while, I stopped using it as I didn't particularly like that method, but nonetheless it's one method. :) I realize that. I just wanted to note that blocking ads by using a hosts file, while very easy, is very inefficient.
